Caribou, Maine – Smoky skies have settled over northern and north-central Maine Sunday, sending air quality into unhealthy territory and raising concerns for anyone spending time outdoors. People across the region, especially those with heart or lung conditions, the elderly, children, and teens, are being urged to avoid prolonged outdoor activity as thick haze reduces visibility and increases health risks.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, the air quality alert remains in effect for all of northern and north-central Maine due to elevated levels of fine particulate matter from wildfire smoke. Residents should limit heavy exertion, reschedule outdoor events when possible, and take frequent breaks if working outside. Common symptoms may include headaches, irritated eyes, chest discomfort, and increased coughing. Anyone experiencing trouble breathing or aggravated asthma is advised to seek shelter indoors.

Communities from Presque Isle to Houlton and Millinocket are expected to experience these unhealthy conditions throughout the day, with high temperatures reaching the upper 70s to near 80 degrees. Drivers should use caution on area highways due to reduced visibility, while local schools and recreation centers may adjust outdoor activities. The public is also encouraged to monitor updates from Maine DEP and NOAA as the smoke may linger into Monday if winds do not shift.

Poor air quality is expected to persist through tonight, with additional alerts possible if smoky conditions remain.
