Caribou, Maine – Wildfire smoke drifting down from Canada has triggered an Air Quality Alert across northern Maine through 11 p.m. Tuesday, reducing visibility and increasing health risks for sensitive groups.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, particle pollution levels are expected to reach the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category today. The smoke is forecast to remain in northern Maine through at least Thursday, with hazy skies and poor air quality affecting outdoor conditions across Aroostook County and neighboring areas.
Residents, especially children, older adults, and those with respiratory conditions, are urged to limit time outdoors, avoid strenuous activities, and keep windows closed. Moderate air quality levels are expected across central and southern Maine, but the combination of smoke, heat, and humidity may worsen conditions for vulnerable populations statewide.
This is the second significant smoke event in Maine this summer, highlighting the ongoing reach of Canadian wildfire activity. While no road closures or school impacts are reported, health officials recommend using air purifiers indoors and checking local AQI readings before going outside.
The air quality alert remains in effect until 11 p.m., but additional advisories may follow if smoke continues to linger into midweek.
