Akhiok, Alaska – A magnitude 5.3 earthquake shook waters 109 kilometers south of Akhiok early Sunday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The earthquake struck at 2:44 a.m. local time, with a depth of 12 kilometers beneath the surface. The tremor was centered offshore, near the southern tip of Kodiak Island. Residents in nearby areas, including Akhiok and Kodiak, reported mild shaking.
The National Tsunami Warning Center stated no tsunami advisory was issued following the earthquake. Officials continue to monitor the region for aftershocks.
Alaska, located along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences frequent earthquakes. Residents are reminded to review earthquake preparedness measures and secure heavy objects at home.
Sunday’s event follows a series of smaller quakes recorded in the region in recent weeks. No damage or injuries have been reported.
