Big Bear Lake, CA – A magnitude 2.9 earthquake struck near Big Bear Lake early Monday morning, jolting residents awake in the quiet hours. The quake occurred at 12:54 a.m., with its epicenter located approximately 3 miles northwest of Big Bear Lake, at a depth of 5.9 kilometers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
Though relatively small in magnitude, the tremor was felt by several residents in the surrounding area, with reports indicating light shaking. The USGS Community Internet Intensity Map categorized the shaking as “light,” with most reports coming from the immediate vicinity of the epicenter. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the quake.
Big Bear Lake, located in Southern California’s San Bernardino Mountains, is no stranger to seismic activity. The area experiences frequent small to moderate earthquakes due to its proximity to the San Andreas Fault system.
