Madison, Wis. – A line of strong thunderstorms is sweeping across southern Wisconsin this afternoon, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds and the threat of hail to several communities. The system is tracking east-southeast, raising concerns for both Madison and the Milwaukee metro area into the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, organized storms are currently impacting the Madison area and may intensify as they move east. An outflow boundary pushing toward Milwaukee could spark additional pop-up storms, some capable of producing damaging winds.
Cities from Janesville to Oconomowoc remain under the threat of strong wind gusts, with reports already coming in from communities west of Madison. Heavy downpours may create localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas and near busy highways such as I-39/90 and I-94. Commuters should use caution and expect sudden visibility drops.
Emergency officials advise residents to secure outdoor items, stay indoors, and avoid windows during storms. Power outages may occur where winds are strongest. Travelers should delay non-essential trips until the system clears later tonight.
