Madison, WI – Drivers across Madison and Dane County are being urged to take extra caution today as another round of snow, ice, and freezing rain moves into southern Wisconsin. The Madison Police Department says slick roads may cause slower commutes and increased crash risks throughout the day and into the evening.

According to the Madison Police Department, the wintry system is expected to create icy patches on major routes, side streets, and bridges—areas that tend to freeze first. Officials are reminding drivers of their long-standing message: “Ice and snow, take it slow.” MPD says reduced visibility, untreated roads, and rapidly changing conditions may worsen travel throughout the afternoon and during the evening drive.

MPD shared several winter driving safety recommendations, urging residents to fully clear snow and ice from windows, lights, roofs, and hoods before traveling. Drivers are also encouraged to slow down, increase their following distance to roughly eight seconds, and avoid sudden braking or acceleration, which can cause vehicles to skid on icy surfaces.

Police advise keeping headlights on low beam, watching closely for pedestrians and bicyclists, and giving snowplows plenty of room—at least 200 feet on highways and about 75 feet on city streets. Officials also recommend keeping an ice scraper, shovel, emergency kit, and charged phone inside your vehicle.

If a driver slides off the road, MPD says they should remain inside the vehicle with their seatbelt fastened and call for help. Those who are able to work remotely or use transit are encouraged to do so until conditions improve.
