Alexandria, IN – A late-night traffic stop during hazardous winter weather led to the arrest of a Henry County man after Indiana State Police said he was driving more than 110 mph on a snow- and ice-covered roadway near Alexandria.

According to Indiana State Police–Pendleton, Trooper Blake Stephenson arrested a 29-year-old man on State Road 128 near County Road 300 W in Madison County after clocking the vehicle traveling at more than triple the safe speed for the conditions Wednesday night. Police said visibility and traction were significantly reduced across the area due to ongoing winter weather.

Inside the vehicle, the trooper reportedly found a juvenile passenger. According to the Madison County Prosecutor’s Office, the driver was arrested on preliminary charges of reckless driving and neglect of a dependent. ISP said the child was safely released to relatives following the traffic stop.

State Police emphasized the heightened danger of extreme speeding on icy roads, especially during the early winter pattern affecting central Indiana this week. Troopers across the region have responded to numerous slide-offs and weather-related crashes as temperatures remain below freezing.

“Driving at extreme speeds on icy roads puts everyone at risk,” ISP said in its statement. “Please slow down, especially during winter weather. Your decisions behind the wheel can save lives.”

Drivers in Madison, Henry, and surrounding counties are urged to use additional caution through the remainder of the week as scattered snow showers and refreezing overnight continue to make travel unpredictable.
