Phoenix, AZ – Truck drivers traveling through Arizona will now have more room to rest and refuel, as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) announced the opening of a new commercial truck parking lot at the Sunset Point Rest Area along Interstate 17 between Black Canyon City and Cordes Junction.
According to ADOT, the new lot adds 19 parking spaces for commercial vehicles, supplementing the existing 27 that are frequently full. The $4.1 million project also includes covered ramadas and waterless vaulted toilets for improved driver comfort.
Additional truck parking expansions are in the works across the state, with four new rest area upgrades planned over the next year:
- I-40 Parks Rest Area (west of Flagstaff): Reopening spring 2026, adding 21 truck-only spaces.
- I-17 Christensen Rest Area (south of Flagstaff): Reopening spring 2026, with 21 new spaces for truck use.
- I-10 Burnt Wells Rest Area (west of Phoenix): Adding 125 spaces in late 2026.
- I-40 Meteor Crater Rest Area (west of Winslow): Adding 133 spaces by winter 2027.
This expansion follows 57 new spaces added in December at the Haviland Rest Area on I-40 near Kingman. The improvements are part of ADOT’s 2023 Statewide Truck Parking Implementation Plan, created in collaboration with truck drivers and industry partners to address ongoing parking shortages.
“It’s part of a statewide plan to add hundreds more commercial truck parking spaces along our freeways,” ADOT said in a statement.
