When officers arrived, they encountered the suspect, who allegedly pulled out a firearm and opened fire. Several shots were reportedly fired, striking one Granite City police officer before the suspect fled on foot.
The injured officer was transported to a nearby hospital and is reported to be in stable condition, ISP stated.
Following the shooting, ISP deployed K9 units and an aircraft to assist in the search. The Granite City Police Department, Alton Police Department, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, local agencies, U.S. Marshals, and the FBI also joined the coordinated effort. Authorities searched through the evening and into early Thursday morning.
Officials say the suspect was located and apprehended at approximately 3:00 a.m. in Granite City. He is currently being held at the Madison County Jail pending charges.
