Macon, GA – A rare winter storm is expected to bring snow-covered roads and hazardous travel conditions to Macon and much of central Georgia early Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 3 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST Sunday. Forecasters expect 1 to 3 inches of snow, an amount capable of significantly disrupting travel across the region.

The heaviest impacts are expected along Interstate 75, as well as major roadways including I-16 and U.S. 41, affecting Bibb County and the greater Macon metro area. With limited snow-removal infrastructure in central Georgia, even light accumulations could lead to dangerous driving conditions.

Officials warn that roads may quickly become slick and icy, especially on bridges and overpasses during the early morning hours. Travel during the Sunday morning commute could be particularly hazardous.

The warning also includes nearby communities such as Warner Robins, Fort Valley, Perry, and Jeffersonville, where untreated roads may become impassable for short periods.

Drivers who must travel are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and carry emergency supplies including food, water, and a flashlight. Road conditions can be checked by calling Georgia 511.
