Mount Clemens, MI – A Macomb County Sheriff’s Office investigation into a Sterling Heights police shooting has officially been closed, with officials concluding the officer involved acted within Michigan law and department policy.
According to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, detectives were called in to conduct an independent investigation following an officer-involved shooting on Tuesday, December 3, at a condominium building in the 44000 block of Apple Blossom Drive in Sterling Heights.
Authorities said the incident began as a welfare check requested for 54-year-old Nicolas Reinaldo Quaranta, who had allegedly made threats indicating an intent to shoot himself. Responding officers and trained crisis negotiators spent more than an hour attempting to de-escalate the situation.
Investigators said Mr. Quaranta allegedly pointed a firearm at his own head and later threatened to point the weapon at officers. He reportedly positioned himself at the top of a staircase inside the building and repeatedly refused commands to come downstairs and exit.
According to the sheriff’s office, Mr. Quaranta eventually stood up, bent over, retrieved his firearm, and raised it toward officers. At that point, one officer discharged their weapon.
Officers immediately requested medical assistance and rendered aid, but Mr. Quaranta was pronounced deceased at the scene. No officers were injured during the incident.
Following a full review, the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office stated it found no evidence to support criminal charges against the officer involved. Officials concluded the use of force was justified and consistent with Michigan law, as well as applicable agency policies, standards, and guidelines.
The investigation has now been formally closed.
