Lumberton, N.C. – The National Weather Service has extended a Flood Warning for the Lumber River in Robeson County, keeping neighborhoods near Lumberton under threat of high water through late Friday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, the river measured 14.5 feet Wednesday night, well above its 13-foot flood stage. Water levels are expected to remain high through Thursday before dropping below flood stage early Friday morning.

Floodwaters are already impacting yards in the Pines community, Coxs Pond, and properties along River Road. Additional homes between the Pepsi plant and the river on Lumberton’s east side are also at risk. Officials warn drivers not to attempt travel across water-covered roads, stressing that most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.

Emergency managers urge residents in low-lying areas to move valuables to higher ground, monitor rising water, and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.

The Lumber River is forecast to continue receding through the weekend, with levels projected to reach 10.7 feet by Monday evening. The Flood Warning remains in effect until Friday night, with further statements expected Thursday.
