Lubbock, TX – Residents across the South Plains will feel a sharp blast of Arctic air tonight as temperatures plummet after sunset, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Lubbock. Wind chills are expected to fall into the middle to upper teens, with a cold and mostly cloudy Sunday to follow.

Forecasters say overnight lows will range from the upper teens to mid-20s across the region. Cities including Lubbock, Plainview, Silverton, and Denver City are all projected to experience temperatures well below freezing by early Sunday morning. Winds will shift from the north and northeast, gradually diminishing overnight but keeping conditions brisk.

Sunday will stay cold, with temperatures struggling to climb past the mid-30s. Most areas across the South Plains and Rolling Plains will remain locked under a mostly cloudy sky, limiting daytime warming.

The cold snap arrives as Arctic air sinks southward across Texas, bringing a noticeable cooldown following milder weather earlier in the week. NWS meteorologists advise residents to prepare for the colder conditions by dressing in layers, limiting time outdoors, and ensuring pets and vulnerable individuals are protected from the chill.

Road conditions are expected to remain mostly dry, but cold pavement temperatures may create brief slick spots in shaded areas or on bridges during early-morning hours. Officials recommend allowing extra time for travel and using caution during the coldest part of the day.

This cold pattern is expected to persist into early next week, with slight warming possible as skies begin to clear.
