LUBBOCK, Texas – A stretch of unsettled weather is setting up across the South Plains this weekend, with isolated thunderstorms possible as early as Saturday before a stronger round arrives Sunday. Drivers and outdoor plans could be disrupted by locally heavy downpours, especially near the New Mexico state line.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, isolated storms may form Saturday afternoon and evening, bringing brief heavy rainfall but little risk of severe weather. A higher chance for thunderstorms arrives Sunday into Sunday night, with rainfall totals locally exceeding an inch in some spots. Showers could linger into early Monday morning before conditions clear.
Communities from Plainview to Childress and south through Lubbock may see passing storms, with travel delays possible on U.S. Highways 84 and 87. Officials urge residents to monitor weather alerts and avoid driving during the heaviest rain. While flooding is not widespread, low-lying and poorly drained areas may collect water quickly.
By Monday, skies turn mostly sunny with highs near 86 degrees. A stretch of dry, warmer days follows through midweek, with highs climbing into the lower 90s.
More thunderstorms are possible again late week, keeping the South Plains on alert.
