LUBBOCK, Texas – Under a bright, pale sunrise, the South Plains wake to crisp fall air this Tuesday morning—one of those calm, golden starts that hint at change ahead. Warm sunshine will dominate through midweek before clouds and storm chances arrive by Thursday afternoon, bringing a brief shift in this otherwise mild pattern.

The National Weather Service in Lubbock expects clear skies and light north winds today, with highs reaching the low 70s. By Wednesday, a stronger southwesterly breeze ushers in warmer air, pushing highs into the low 80s. It’ll feel like a final warm stretch before moisture returns from the Gulf, setting up Thursday’s unsettled weather.

By early Thursday afternoon, clouds increase, and scattered showers develop across the region. A few rumbles of thunder are possible late in the day, particularly along and south of U.S. Highway 84 and near the Caprock. Rain coverage should stay spotty, but any storm could bring brief gusty winds and localized downpours. Travelers should be mindful of slick roads during the Thursday evening commute or early Friday morning drives.

Friday brings lingering clouds and cooler air, with highs around 75°F under breezy west winds. The weekend, however, turns nearly ideal—clear skies, comfortable afternoons, and cool mornings perfect for outdoor work, high school games, or pre-Halloween prep.

The longer-range models hint that cooler mornings could deepen into the upper 40s early next week, an early sign of fall’s first chill edging closer to the South Plains.
