LUBBOCK, Texas – Spotty thunderstorms may bring brief downpours and gusty winds to the South Plains and Rolling Plains on Wednesday, but the risk for severe weather remains low. After today, hotter and drier conditions will take hold through the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, isolated thunderstorms will develop during the day with rainfall totals remaining light. Stronger storms could briefly push wind gusts up to 50 mph, but no widespread severe weather is expected. By late Wednesday night, skies will clear with calm winds and overnight lows in the upper 60s.

Thursday through Saturday will trend hotter, with highs climbing into the low to mid-90s across Lubbock, Plainview, and surrounding counties. Sunshine will dominate, and winds will stay generally light out of the east. This stretch of dry weather will increase outdoor fire risks and keep soil moisture low.

Rain chances return late Sunday into early next week, but the coverage is expected to be limited, with only about a 20 percent chance of showers or storms each day.

Residents are advised to limit outdoor activity during peak heat in the afternoons and stay hydrated. Additional updates will be issued if storm chances increase heading into next week.
