LUBBOCK, Texas – Frost glitters across the fields this early Sunday, a thin shimmer marking the South Plains’ first brush with near-freezing air. The calm start won’t last. By Monday, a surge of warm, dry air returns — bringing fire danger and a quick end to the weekend chill.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, temperatures early today dipped close to 32°F in parts of the far southwest Texas Panhandle. Sensitive plants and pipes may have seen light frost, particularly west of I-27 and across rural cotton fields near Levelland and Morton. Residents should continue protecting outdoor taps and young vegetation through sunrise.

By Monday, conditions flip sharply. Southwest winds up to 25 mph combine with humidity levels near 15 percent, creating elevated fire weather for the Rolling Plains and far southern Panhandle. Drivers along U.S. 84 and I-27 should avoid pulling off on grassy shoulders, and ranchers are urged to postpone burns or welding.

Highs rebound into the upper 80s by midweek, with bright skies and dry air dominating through Wednesday. A slight chance of showers returns Thursday morning as moisture brushes north from the Hill Country, though widespread rain remains unlikely.

For now, the South Plains faces a week of temperature whiplash — crisp mornings, breezy afternoons, and early signals of the season shifting toward winter’s doorstep.
