LUBBOCK, Texas – An urgent Freeze Warning is in effect from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. CDT Thursday across the South Plains and Rolling Plains, including Lubbock, Childress, Post, Brownfield, and Crosbyton, as temperatures are forecast to fall into the mid-20s by dawn. The National Weather Service in Lubbock warns that the hard freeze could end the growing season across the region and may cause damage to unprotected pipes and outdoor plumbing.

According to the National Weather Service, clear skies, dry air, and calm winds behind a cold front will allow rapid temperature drops after midnight. The coldest readings, near 25 degrees, are expected in rural and low-lying areas of Briscoe, Lynn, Terry, King, and Kent Counties, while urban centers like Lubbock may briefly reach the upper 20s before sunrise.

Residents are urged to cover or bring in sensitive plants, wrap exposed pipes, and let faucets drip slowly overnight to prevent freezing. Pets and livestock should be provided with warm shelter and access to unfrozen water. The first widespread hard freeze will likely mark the official end of the growing season across the South Plains.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, motorists should expect frosty bridges and icy spots early Thursday, especially along U.S. 84, U.S. 62/82, and I-27. Drivers should allow extra time for morning commutes and clear frost from windshields before traveling.

Temperatures will rebound into the lower 50s Thursday afternoon with full sunshine, but another cold front this weekend could bring additional frost and freeze risks across the Panhandle and Rolling Plains.
