Lubbock, Texas – A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 7 p.m. CST Tuesday as warm temperatures and gusty winds increase wildfire danger across the Caprock and Rolling Plains.
According to the US National Weather Service in Lubbock, blustery and unseasonably warm conditions will support rapid fire growth if ignition occurs. Southwest to west-southwest winds are expected to range from 10 to 25 mph, with higher gusts possible, especially across the Caprock.
Afternoon high temperatures are forecast to reach 82 degrees in Lubbock and Plainview, 84 degrees in Childress, 81 degrees in Brownfield, and 79 degrees in Aspermont. Combined with low relative humidity, these conditions create an environment favorable for wildfire spread.
Blowing dust may also develop in open areas, potentially reducing visibility along major corridors including US-84 near Lubbock, US-70 near Plainview, US-287 near Childress, US-62 near Brownfield, and US-83 near Aspermont.
Officials urge residents to avoid activities that could spark a fire, including outdoor burning, welding, or the use of equipment that generates sparks. Vehicles parked on dry grass can also ignite fires under these conditions.
Fire weather concerns are especially critical during peak afternoon heating, when wind speeds and temperatures are highest.
The warning may impact agricultural operations, oil field activity, and drivers traveling across exposed highways during the afternoon hours.
Residents are advised to remain alert and report any signs of smoke or fire to local authorities immediately.
