Lubbock, Texas – Rain and thunderstorm chances will increase across the South Plains today after a dry start to the morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, temperatures will climb well above seasonal averages Friday afternoon, with highs reaching near 72 degrees in Lubbock, 70 in Plainview and Brownfield, 75 in Childress and 77 in Aspermont.
As the day progresses, moisture will increase across the region, leading to scattered rain showers and thunderstorms developing into the afternoon and evening hours. Rain chances range from 20% to 60% across the area, with higher coverage expected later in the day and into the overnight period.
Forecasters say the risk for severe thunderstorms remains low at this time. However, locally heavy downpours and occasional lightning will be possible with stronger cells.
Drivers along US-84, I-27, US-62, US-83 and US-287 should prepare for wet roadways and brief reductions in visibility during heavier showers.
Overnight lows will remain mild, ranging from the upper 40s to mid-50s across the region.
For students, commuters and those with Friday evening plans, the greatest chance for rain-related disruptions will occur after the end of the workday.
