Lubbock, Texas – Wind gusts up to 50 mph and humidity as low as 13 percent will create critical fire weather conditions across the South Plains from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, with blowing dust possible along I-27 and US-84.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, a Red Flag Warning is in effect for the far southern Texas Panhandle and the South Plains. Southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph will shift west through the afternoon, with peak gusts reaching 50 mph. A Wind Advisory is also in effect from noon to 5 p.m. CST.

Any spark could spread rapidly.

Drivers along I-27 from Lubbock to Plainview and on US-385 near Levelland may encounter sudden crosswinds and localized blowing dust, especially in open fields. Light, unsecured objects can be blown into roadways, creating additional hazards during the afternoon commute.

The combination of strong winds, very low humidity, and dry fuels significantly increases wildfire risk. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and agricultural operations that produce sparks could ignite fast-moving grass fires.

What residents should do now: Avoid outdoor burning, secure loose items, and report any signs of smoke immediately to local authorities.

Winds will gradually diminish after sunset Friday, but dry conditions persist into the weekend. The Red Flag Warning remains in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, with the Wind Advisory active from noon to 5 p.m. across the South Plains.
