Lubbock, Texas – A sharp cooldown and a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms could slow traffic on I-27 and Loop 289 by Tuesday afternoon as a major weather pattern shift moves into the South Plains.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, unseasonably warm temperatures will peak Saturday with highs between 79 and 88 degrees across the region, including Lubbock, Levelland and Plainview. Winds will remain relatively light, but changes begin late Sunday as a cooler air mass settles in.

By Monday, highs will drop into the mid-50s to lower 60s, a nearly 30-degree swing from Saturday’s warmth. Overnight lows will fall into the 30s and 40s, creating a brisk start for early commuters along US-84 and US-62. While rain chances remain low through Monday, moisture will steadily increase.

The greatest impact arrives Tuesday, when rain and thunderstorms become more likely across Lubbock County and surrounding areas. Probability of precipitation rises to between 30 and 60 percent, with scattered storms capable of producing brief heavy downpours. Drivers on I-27, particularly during the late afternoon and evening commute, could encounter reduced visibility and ponding on roadways.

Rain chances continue into Wednesday, keeping conditions unsettled across the South Plains. Residents should monitor local updates, secure outdoor items ahead of stronger storms, and allow extra travel time during heavier rainfall periods.

Additional advisories could be issued as storm timing becomes clearer early next week.
