LUBBOCK, Texas — Temperatures are climbing back into the 80s across the South Plains Sunday, but the warmer air may bring a price. Scattered thunderstorms could develop this afternoon and evening, especially across the Caprock, raising concerns for localized downpours and lightning.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, highs will reach 80 in Plainview, 82 in Lubbock, and 83 in Childress before storm chances increase later in the day. Storm coverage will be hit or miss, but residents are advised to stay alert if skies darken during the evening commute.

Cities including Brownfield, Friona, and Aspermont will also see highs in the low 80s with a slight chance of storms. The risk may be greatest where daytime heating is strongest, particularly in open areas west of Interstate 27. Travel impacts should remain limited, though wet roads and reduced visibility may occur under heavier showers.

Residents are encouraged to monitor weather alerts, secure outdoor items, and be prepared to move indoors if thunder is heard.

Thunderstorm chances taper off overnight, but warmer conditions are expected to continue into early next week.
