Lubbock, Texas – Any spark could turn into a fast-moving wildfire within minutes across the South Plains as winds strengthen and humidity crashes through Saturday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Saturday for the South Plains, Rolling Plains, and far southern Texas Panhandle. Southwest winds between 10 and 20 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph, combined with relative humidity as low as 5 percent, are creating critical fire weather conditions.

Lubbock, Levelland, Plainview, and Brownfield sit in the highest risk zone, where dry grasses can ignite and spread rapidly. Open areas along U.S. Highway 84 and U.S. 87 face heightened خطر as crosswinds could push flames toward roadways, reducing visibility and forcing sudden closures.

Emergency officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and delay any activity that could produce sparks. Power infrastructure across rural counties could also face خطر if lines are damaged by wind-driven debris.

These conditions will persist through sunset, with the most dangerous window lasting into the early evening hours. Additional warnings could be issued if winds strengthen or humidity drops further before nightfall.
