Lubbock, Texas – A period of wintry weather is expected Friday across Lubbock, followed by a sharp temperature drop Friday night that could lead to black ice on area roads.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, a light coating of snow is possible Friday afternoon and evening across the southern Texas Panhandle, including Lubbock. Elsewhere, precipitation may fall as a wintry mix or rain. Daytime impacts are expected to remain minimal.
Conditions change rapidly after sunset. Temperatures are forecast to plunge into the teens to lower 20s overnight, increasing the risk for black ice in areas that receive wet precipitation during the day. Roads, bridges, and overpasses could become slick late Friday night into early Saturday morning.
Forecast lows across the Caprock, including Lubbock, are expected to fall into the upper teens to lower 20s. Farther east into the Rolling Plains, lows are expected to settle into the mid-20s.
Drivers are urged to use caution Friday night, slow down, and watch for icy spots, especially on elevated and untreated roadways. Residents should monitor updates as temperatures and precipitation type will play a key role in travel impacts.
