Lubbock, Texas – Isolated thunderstorms are set to sweep across Lubbock and the Caprock this afternoon and evening, threatening locally heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and small hail that could impact travel and outdoor plans across the Rolling Plains.
According to the US National Weather Service in Lubbock, storms are most likely between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., with the strongest cells expected near Brownfield, Morton, Levelland, and extending into the Rolling Plains cities of Turkey and Paducah. Residents in Muleshoe, Plainview, and Guthrie should also be alert for brief downpours and sudden gusts.
While not every location will see a storm, any isolated thunderstorm could produce winds up to 50 mph and pockets of minor flooding, especially on low-lying roads. High temperatures will reach the upper 80s to low 90s, adding to humidity and making travel hazardous where storms develop. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads, secure loose outdoor items, and monitor alerts from local agencies.
Tonight’s storms mark a pattern similar to recent July activity, bringing quick bursts of rain and lightning rather than widespread soaking. Residents should keep weather radios handy and plan for possible delays or changing road conditions.
Storm threats are expected to wind down after midnight, but more updates may follow if additional cells develop.
