Lubbock, Texas – Temperatures across the South Plains surged into the mid-90s Friday, with cities like Childress and Aspermont reaching 96°F under clear skies and persistent breezy winds.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, south winds of 15 to 25 mph will continue through tonight, helping to moderate overnight lows into the upper 60s and low 70s. The combination of sun, heat, and wind could lead to increased fire danger in dry areas, and residents are urged to avoid burning or using outdoor equipment that may spark.
Lubbock topped out at 95°F Friday afternoon, while Brownfield and Friona saw highs of 94°F. Winds are expected to ease slightly overnight, but conditions will remain dry and warm into the weekend. Morning lows will hover near 67°F in Plainview and Friona, offering limited overnight relief.
With no rain in the immediate outlook, residents should stay hydrated, limit outdoor work during peak heat, and ensure pets and livestock have access to shade and water.
A weak cold front may bring a slight dip in temperatures by early next week, but no major relief is expected through Sunday.
