Lubbock, TX – A cold front sweeping across the South Plains early Wednesday morning is ushering in cooler air and breezy northeast winds, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Lubbock.
After a mild start, winds from the northeast at 15 to 25 mph will make for a noticeably brisk afternoon, with highs ranging from the upper 50s to lower 60s. Skies will remain mostly sunny, but the wind chill could make it feel several degrees cooler, particularly in open and rural areas.
“This front will pass through the region early in the morning, bringing a shift in wind direction and dropping temperatures through the day,” the NWS said in its morning update. “Expect a cool, breezy afternoon with clear skies tonight.”
By evening, temperatures are forecast to fall into the mid-30s to low 40s, setting the stage for a chilly night across the Panhandle and South Plains. Drivers and outdoor workers should prepare for gusty crosswinds, especially along U.S. Highway 84, Interstate 27, and rural routes where open terrain allows stronger gusts.
No precipitation is expected, but the cooler air mass will mark the beginning of a stretch of below-normal temperatures lasting into the weekend. Thursday will remain sunny but cool, with lighter winds and highs near 60°.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, including decorations and patio furniture, ahead of the gusty conditions.
