Lubbock, TX – Severe storm chances will ramp up quickly after 1 p.m. across West Texas, with the greatest concern focused east of Lubbock where a few storms could intensify before sunset.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop across the Rolling Plains this afternoon, continuing through sunset. While overall coverage will remain limited, any storm that forms could produce wind gusts between 50 and 60 mph along with hail up to half-dollar size, around 1.25 inches in diameter.

Communities including Plainview, Matador, Childress, and Aspermont sit in the higher probability zone, where storm chances climb above 20 to 30 percent. Areas closer to Lubbock and the Caprock may see only brief or high-based showers, with less than a 15 percent chance of storm development.

Drivers along U.S. 84 and U.S. 62 could encounter sudden gusty winds and brief heavy rain if storms develop nearby. Visibility may drop quickly under stronger cells.

Residents should stay weather-aware through the late afternoon and have alerts enabled, as storms will be scattered but capable of producing localized damage.

The threat will diminish by sunset, though additional updates are possible if storm coverage expands.
