Lubbock, Texas – Travel across the South Plains could become hazardous overnight as powerful north winds ramp up, with gusts strong enough to push vehicles off course and reduce visibility with blowing dust.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, with sustained winds between 30 and 40 mph and gusts reaching up to 55 mph. The strongest winds are expected through the morning and midday hours, creating dangerous crosswinds across the region.

Lubbock, Plainview, Levelland, and Brownfield will see the most consistent impacts, especially along I-27, U.S. 84, and rural east-west roadways where crosswinds can be severe. High-profile vehicles, including semis and trailers, face an increased risk of losing control. Blowing dust may also reduce visibility suddenly in open areas.

Loose outdoor items could be blown around or damaged, and sporadic power outages are possible if winds impact lines or equipment.

Residents should secure outdoor objects, delay non-essential travel in high-profile vehicles, and use caution on exposed roadways. Winds are expected to ease Friday evening, but additional advisories could follow if conditions persist.
