New York, NY – A winter system arriving early Tuesday is expected to bring several inches of snow to parts of the Lower Hudson Valley and northwest New Jersey, creating hazardous road conditions during both the morning and evening commutes.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday for Orange, Putnam, Rockland, and western Passaic counties. Snow will begin before sunrise, with the steadiest snowfall expected through mid-morning and early afternoon.

Orange County is forecast to receive 3 to 5 inches of snow, with localized totals near 6 inches possible north and west of I-84 and elevations above 750 feet. Occasional snowfall rates could reach 1 inch per hour, rapidly covering roads and reducing visibility.

Farther south—across Putnam, Rockland, and western Passaic—snow totals are expected to range from 1 to 3 inches, with mixing or a change to rain likely by mid-afternoon. A brief switch back to snow is possible as the system exits Tuesday evening.

According to the NWS, roads, bridges, and overpasses will become slick and hazardous, especially during the Tuesday morning commute. For Orange County, where temperatures stay colder longer, the evening commute may also be affected.

Communities including Newburgh, Middletown, Monroe, Mahwah, Thiells, Brewster, and Nanuet should plan for slow travel, longer drive times, and reduced visibility through the first half of the day.

Residents are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and check local DOT resources for real-time road updates. Officials also advise caution on sidewalks, steps, and driveways as icy patches may form.
