Charleston, S.C. – Strong thunderstorms are expected to sweep through the Lowcountry late this afternoon, bringing damaging wind gusts, large hail, and the potential for isolated tornadoes between 4 and 8 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a broken line of storms will move in from the northwest, affecting much of southeastern South Carolina, including Charleston, Beaufort, Walterboro, and Moncks Corner. The primary threat is wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, but forecasters say brief tornadoes and cloud-to-ground lightning are also possible.
The Level 2 (Slight Risk) storm category covers a broad area of the state, with the highest risk centered along the I-95 corridor and coastal zones. Residents in Bluffton, Hilton Head, and surrounding areas should prepare for sudden weather changes and possible power outages due to downed trees or lines.
Officials urge everyone to remain weather aware, avoid unnecessary travel during the storm window, and seek shelter indoors if warnings are issued. Lightning can strike even outside the rain core, and large hail may cause property or vehicle damage.
Severe weather alerts remain in effect until 8 p.m., with further updates possible if the threat escalates.
