Charleston, SC – Much of southeast Georgia and southeast South Carolina will face dangerously low wind chills as an Extreme Cold Watch takes effect Sunday evening through Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston.
According to forecasters, wind chills may drop to around 10 degrees, impacting areas including Charleston, North Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Summerville, Moncks Corner, Walterboro, Allendale, Hampton, Jenkins County, and Screven County. Officials warn that temperatures this low can lead to frostbite or hypothermia within a short time if skin is left unprotected.
The cold air mass is expected to arrive late Sunday as winds increase and temperatures fall rapidly across communities from Charleston to inland Colleton and Dorchester counties, as well as parts of southeast Georgia. NWS meteorologists said the harshest conditions will occur overnight into early Monday morning.
Emergency officials are encouraging residents to dress in layers, including hats, gloves, and face coverings if they must go outdoors. Families are also urged to check on older relatives and vulnerable neighbors, and to ensure that space heaters are used safely. Generators, grills, and other fuel-burning devices should never be used indoors due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
More updates are expected as the system approaches the region.
