Louisville, Ky. – A cold front sweeping across Kentucky Thursday is set to bring widespread showers and storms, with the strongest activity expected in the afternoon and evening. The primary hazard will be gusty winds, which could create hazardous driving conditions and scattered power outages across central and eastern parts of the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, storms began developing early Thursday morning across southern Indiana and northern Kentucky, with the threat shifting east and southeast through the day. By late afternoon, stronger cells may organize along the front, producing damaging wind gusts.
Communities from Lexington to Hazard are most at risk for the more intense storms, while Louisville could still see rounds of heavy rain and isolated strong winds during the morning commute. Drivers are urged to use caution on I-64, I-75, and other major highways where sudden downpours and crosswinds may limit visibility.
Emergency managers recommend avoiding unnecessary travel during stronger storms, securing outdoor items, and preparing for possible brief outages as winds increase.
Another round of storms is possible Friday afternoon as a secondary cold front approaches, keeping unsettled weather in place through the end of the week.
