Kentucky wakes up under a hard, biting cold as Arctic air tightens its grip. Frost coats windshields, breath hangs in the air, and even short trips outside feel harsh. This is one of the coldest mornings Louisville has seen so far this December, with conditions changing quickly after sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, very cold air moved into the region early Sunday. Morning temperatures dropped into the single digits, while wind chills plunged between -10° and +5°. Gusty northwest winds of 15 to 20 mph made it feel even colder, especially in open and elevated areas.

High temperatures today struggle to climb. Most of Louisville and surrounding Jefferson County only reach the teens to low 20s, a level cold enough to challenge daily routines. Wind chills remain in the single digits through much of the day, increasing the risk of cold-related stress for anyone outdoors for extended periods.

Drivers should watch for patchy black ice, especially on bridges, ramps, and untreated side streets. Melting during brief afternoon sun can refreeze quickly after sunset, creating slick travel conditions. Plan extra time if traveling and keep a winter kit in your vehicle.

This cold snap arrives during the week before Christmas, when holiday travel and school breaks begin. Residents should protect the four Ps: people, pets, plants, and pipes. Bring pets indoors, drip faucets overnight, and dress in multiple layers if heading out.

Looking ahead, Monday morning remains very cold, with lows again in the single digits to near zero. Winds ease slightly, but the cold lingers. Temperatures begin to moderate by Tuesday, offering a slow return to more seasonable December weather.
