Louisville, KY – Kentuckians may catch a rare glimpse of the northern lights tonight, as a powerful G3–G4 geomagnetic storm continues to make auroras visible deep into the Midwest and Ohio Valley.
According to the US National Weather Service Louisville, skies will remain mostly clear overnight Wednesday, providing ideal viewing conditions for the aurora. The best window for spotting activity is expected between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m., especially in darker rural areas away from city lights.
Temperatures will dip into the low to mid-30s overnight, followed by a warm-up into the 60s Thursday and low to mid-70s by Saturday, continuing the region’s stretch of mild, pleasant weather. Only slight rain chances are expected Friday and Saturday night, with most locations seeing little to no measurable rainfall.
The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center reports that aurora activity could extend into the central U.S. tonight, making Kentucky one of the southernmost states with a chance to see the northern lights — an occurrence that happens only a few times per decade.
