A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect this morning for areas along and north of the I-64 corridor, as dangerously low wind chills impact north-central Kentucky.
According to the National Weather Service office in Louisville, the advisory is valid through 11 a.m. EST today, with very cold wind chills expected during the early morning hours. Wind chill values may drop as low as -13°F in some locations north of I-64, creating hazardous conditions for anyone outdoors for extended periods.
Communities including Louisville, Shelbyville, Frankfort, and surrounding counties are experiencing the coldest conditions near sunrise. Travel along major routes such as I-64, I-71, I-65, and US-127 may be impacted as commuters face bitter cold while walking to vehicles, waiting for transportation, or dealing with roadside issues.
While widespread snowfall is not expected, the extreme cold alone poses a significant safety concern. Wind chills this low can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, particularly when winds remain elevated. Stranded motorists or those without adequate winter clothing could be at increased risk.
The National Weather Service urges residents to dress in layers, cover all exposed skin, and limit time spent outdoors until conditions improve later this morning. Hats, gloves, and scarves are strongly recommended. Families and neighbors are encouraged to check on elderly individuals, those without reliable heating, and others who may be vulnerable to the cold. Pets should be brought indoors during the coldest periods.
Wind chills are expected to slowly improve later today as temperatures rise slightly, though cold conditions will persist through the remainder of the week. Additional cold weather advisories may be issued if similar conditions redevelop overnight.
Residents should continue monitoring forecast updates and take cold-weather precautions seriously as winter conditions remain firmly in place across the region.
