Louisville, Kentucky — Light freezing rain and snow could create hazardous travel conditions across central Kentucky during the Wednesday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 4 a.m. to 11 a.m. EST for areas between the Cumberland Parkway and the Ohio River, including the Louisville metro area. Light freezing rain and snow showers are expected to spread into the region before sunrise.

Forecasters say temperatures will hover around freezing, but cold road surface temperatures may allow precipitation to freeze on contact. This could result in slick spots on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses, even where air temperatures remain near or slightly above 32 degrees.

A light glaze of ice and a dusting to a coating of snow are possible in some locations. While accumulations are expected to be minor, officials warn that even small amounts of ice can significantly impact travel, particularly during peak commute hours.

Major routes including Interstate 64, Interstate 65, and Interstate 71 could see slowdowns if icy patches develop. Secondary roads and elevated surfaces are expected to be the most hazardous, especially before road treatments take effect.

The National Weather Service notes that precipitation should transition to mostly rain by late morning or early afternoon as temperatures slowly rise. However, conditions may remain slick in shaded or untreated areas through mid-morning.

Drivers are urged to reduce speeds, increase following distances, and allow extra time to reach their destinations. Pedestrians should also use caution on sidewalks and steps that may become icy.

For commuters, students, and early-shift workers, the highest-risk window is from before sunrise through mid-morning Wednesday, when freezing precipitation and cold pavement could combine to produce slick travel conditions across the Louisville area.
