Louisville, KY – The National Weather Service in Louisville is warning residents to prepare for heavy rain and gusty thunderstorms late Saturday into Sunday, as a strong cold front sweeps across Kentucky.

Forecasters say the region will stay dry through Friday, with highs in the 70s and low 80s, before storm chances increase sharply this weekend. The system is expected to bring widespread rainfall of 1 to 2 inches, with localized totals over 2 inches possible — raising concerns for minor flooding in low-lying areas.

According to the NWS, the storms may produce strong gusty winds of 20–30 mph and isolated downpours, though the overall risk of severe weather remains low.

Residents are urged to monitor forecasts and be prepared for changing conditions Saturday night into early Sunday morning. The rain will likely be beneficial for dry areas, but forecasters caution that heavier pockets could still cause brief flooding.

“Confidence in widespread rain is high,” meteorologists said in Wednesday’s early morning update. “The main impacts will be gusty winds and isolated flooding from heavier rain bands.”

Additional updates are expected as the weekend front approaches.
