Louisville and much of central Kentucky will see a wet and windy day today as a strong cold front pushes through the region, according to the National Weather Service in Louisville. Widespread rain showers are expected to develop and continue through the afternoon and early evening, bringing slick roads and reduced visibility during the daytime commute.
While rainfall will be widespread, isolated rumbles of thunder cannot be ruled out, though severe storms are not expected. The more significant concern will be the gusty winds, which are forecast to increase steadily throughout the day. Sustained winds of 20 to 25 mph will be common, with gusts reaching 30 to 40 mph, especially during the afternoon and early evening hours. These gusts could blow around unsecured outdoor items and make travel more difficult for high-profile vehicles.
Temperatures today will remain above normal for one more day, climbing into the mid to upper 50s across Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green, and surrounding communities. However, that warmth will be short-lived. Much colder air will surge into the region late tonight behind the cold front, causing temperatures to fall rapidly overnight.
By Friday morning, readings will drop into the upper 20s to lower 30s, with daytime highs struggling to recover into the 30s. The combination of lingering moisture and falling temperatures could create patchy slick spots, particularly on bridges and elevated roadways early Friday.
Rain will taper off late tonight, but blustery conditions will persist into Friday, reinforcing the colder feel. Residents across Louisville and central Kentucky are encouraged to secure loose outdoor decorations, allow extra travel time today, and stay weather-aware as conditions change quickly. Winter coats will be needed again by Friday as the region transitions back to a much colder pattern.
