Louisville, KY – Flooding continues across parts of the Louisville metro area this afternoon as heavy rain drenches Jefferson and Bullitt counties, prompting a Flood Warning from the National Weather Service (NWS) in Louisville. The warning remains in effect until 6:30 p.m. EDT Tuesday.
According to the NWS, between 2 and 5 inches of rain have already fallen, leading to flooding of creeks, streets, and low-lying areas in Louisville and surrounding suburbs. While rain is beginning to taper off, forecasters caution that flooding remains ongoing in several neighborhoods and could take hours to subside.
Communities impacted include Louisville, Jeffersontown, St. Matthews, Shively, Middletown, and Lyndon, as well as nearby Jeffersonville and New Albany in southern Indiana. Up to half an inch of additional rainfall is possible before conditions improve later this evening.
Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways and remember the NWS warning: “Turn around, don’t drown.” Officials emphasize that most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles attempting to cross high water.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local alerts and traffic reports through the evening commute. For safety information, visit weather.gov/safety/flood.
