Louisville, Kentucky – A major winter storm is set to bring heavy snow and ice across central Kentucky and southern Indiana this weekend, with travel conditions expected to deteriorate rapidly as snowfall intensifies through Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, the heaviest snow is expected across a wide swath of central Kentucky, including Louisville, Frankfort, Lexington, and surrounding communities. Snow totals of 12 to 15 inches are possible north of the Western Kentucky Parkway, with 8 to 12 inches likely from Owensboro through Elizabethtown and toward the Bluegrass Region. Lighter, but still impactful, snow amounts of 3 to 6 inches are expected across southern Kentucky.
Forecasters warn snowfall rates could reach one inch per hour at times, quickly covering roads and significantly reducing visibility. Interstate corridors including I-64, I-65, and I-75 are expected to see hazardous conditions, especially overnight when road treatments become less effective.
Southern Indiana communities near the Ohio River may also see substantial accumulations, adding to regional travel disruptions. Emergency officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel, prepare for possible power interruptions, and ensure vehicles and homes are winter-ready.
Snow totals may fluctuate as the storm evolves, but impacts are expected to last into Monday morning. Additional advisories and warnings remain possible as this high-impact winter storm continues to track across the region.
