ouisville, KY – Strong storms are expected to move across Kentucky today and continue through Wednesday, bringing heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and the potential for brief flooding, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Louisville.
Forecasters say periods of showers and thunderstorms are likely this afternoon and will persist through midweek. Some storms could intensify to strong or potentially severe levels. The main threats include gusty winds, lightning, and small hail.
According to the NWS, rainfall totals could range from 2 to 4 inches across much of the region. That level of precipitation raises the risk of minor flooding in low-lying areas and spots with poor drainage. The storms are expected to impact both urban centers such as Louisville and Lexington, as well as smaller towns throughout central and southern Kentucky.
The NWS currently places confidence at a “medium” level for strong storm development through Wednesday. Residents are urged to monitor forecasts, secure outdoor items, and prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions.
Travelers on Interstates 65, 64, and 75 should anticipate possible slowdowns during heavy downpours, particularly during the afternoon and evening commute hours.
Officials recommend avoiding flooded roads and staying alert to potential weather warnings over the next several days.
