Lake Charles, Louisiana – Dry air and gusty winds sweeping into Louisiana this weekend are setting the stage for dangerous fire conditions across much of the state, with the highest risk expected Saturday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday for southwest and central Louisiana. A Fire Weather Watch has also been issued for a broader area from Sunday morning through Sunday evening, signaling the threat could expand across central and southern Louisiana as dry air lingers behind a cold front.
Communities including Lake Charles, Lafayette, Opelousas, Alexandria, Eunice, and New Iberia fall within the warning area. Northeasterly winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph combined with humidity dropping near 20 percent will allow any spark to ignite quickly and spread fast across dry grasses and brush.
Parishes across the Acadiana region, including Calcasieu, Vermilion, St. Landry, Iberia, St. Martin, and Jefferson Davis, may see the most elevated fire behavior during peak afternoon heating. Temperatures could reach the lower 80s, further drying vegetation.
Fire officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, discard cigarettes safely, and delay yard debris burning or agricultural fires until humidity levels recover. Even small flames or sparks from equipment can quickly turn into fast-moving grass fires under these conditions.
The elevated fire threat may persist into Sunday as dry air remains in place. Additional warnings could be issued if conditions worsen.
