New Orleans, La. – A soggy weekend is ahead for southeast Louisiana, with rounds of showers and thunderstorms likely to disrupt outdoor plans and slow travel through early next week.
According to the National Weather Service New Orleans, storm chances rise again Friday afternoon, with periods of partly sunny skies between showers. Highs will reach the lower 80s, but breezy northeast winds will add to unsettled conditions. A stronger wave of storms is expected Saturday evening into Sunday morning, bringing the greatest potential for heavier downpours and lightning.
Forecasters warn of ponding water on low-lying streets and reduced visibility on I-10, I-610, and surface roads during heavy rain. Sunday afternoon could feature another round of showers with highs near 81. While widespread severe weather is not expected, forecasters noted that frequent lightning and gusty winds remain possible in stronger storms.
By Monday, northeast winds persist with highs climbing back into the mid-80s. A few showers could linger through the afternoon before drier air finally returns midweek.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development urged drivers to allow extra travel time this weekend and to avoid flooded roadways. Residents are also advised to secure outdoor decorations, keep devices charged in case of power interruptions, and prepare pets for stormy conditions.
Cooler mornings are on the horizon by midweek, with lows dipping into the lower 70s and drier skies helping to ease the muggy stretch.
