Louisiana — Low clouds hang heavy over northwest Louisiana this morning, and the air feels damp and uneasy. Puddles ripple along sidewalks in Shreveport, but the bigger concern is what follows. Meteorologists are tracking a strengthening winter system that could turn rain into ice and snow by the weekend.

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Shreveport and much of northwest Louisiana from Friday morning through Sunday morning. Forecast data shows 1 to 3 inches of snow and sleet possible, with ice accumulations between one-quarter and three-quarters of an inch. Localized ice totals could exceed 1 inch, especially north of I-20.

Today remains mild by comparison. Patchy dense fog early limits visibility, followed by cloudy skies and highs in the mid-50s. Roads stay wet, not icy—for now. Conditions begin changing Friday as colder air pushes south. Rain develops again, then transitions to freezing rain, sleet, and snow Friday night as temperatures fall into the 20s.

Saturday brings the highest impact window. Wintry mix becomes widespread, and precipitation may fall steadily for hours. Ice buildup on trees and power lines could lead to scattered outages. Travel may become extremely difficult, especially along I-20, I-49, and U.S. 171. Emergency managers warn conditions could deteriorate quickly after sunset.

Saturday night stays locked in winter. Temperatures drop near 20°F, allowing any melting to refreeze fast. Flash freezing is a real threat. Sunday begins with lingering snow or sleet before tapering off. Cold air remains entrenched into early Monday morning.

Plan ahead now. Limit travel this weekend, prepare for possible power interruptions, and protect pipes and pets. Keep extra time and supplies if travel is unavoidable. How cold did it feel where you are this morning?
