Visibility may drop to one-quarter mile or less across the metro New Orleans and Baton Rouge corridors, including Jefferson, Orleans, St. Bernard, Plaquemines, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, and river parishes. Conditions are especially hazardous along I-10, I-12, I-55, and the Causeway.
Drivers are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and increase following distance. Fog thickens near wetlands, bridges, and low-lying roadways, where sudden visibility drops can catch motorists off guard. Airport operations may also see delays as the fog lingers.
Improvement arrives gradually late this morning as clouds lift and light winds develop. Skies trend sunnier by afternoon, with highs climbing into the low to mid-70s. Roads dry quickly, easing local travel through the afternoon and evening hours.
The warm December pattern continues through Christmas Day. Highs remain near 72, with mild nights and mostly dry conditions. That stretch supports smoother holiday travel across southeast Louisiana once fog clears.
Friday looks favorable for post-Christmas travel. Mostly sunny skies and highs near 76 dominate, with light winds and good visibility. Traffic volume may be the biggest concern rather than weather.
Looking ahead, a slight chance of showers returns Sunday, followed by a notable cool-down early next week. Temperatures dip sharply by Monday night, reminding residents that winter weather can return quickly after warm spells.
