Louisiana wakes to headlights glowing like halos as dense fog presses against windshields and streetlights. Visibility drops fast, and drivers feel the danger immediately.
Across southeast Louisiana, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect through the morning. Visibility falls to one-quarter mile or less, especially near water, marshes, and low-lying roadways. Travel along I-10, I-610, I-55, the Crescent City Connection, and Causeway approaches becomes hazardous during peak morning travel.
The fog lingers through the morning hours before gradually lifting late morning. Conditions improve briefly, but moisture remains trapped near the surface. Another round of dense fog redevelops tonight and may persist into early Saturday, repeating the cycle for holiday travelers.
Once fog thins Saturday, skies brighten and temperatures climb into the upper 70s, an unusually warm feel for late December. Roads dry out, and travel improves through much of the day. To be fair, the calm does not last long.
By Sunday night, clouds thicken again as a weak system approaches. Showers develop overnight and into Monday, with rain chances increasing during high-traffic periods. Wet pavement combined with cooler air raises concerns for reduced traction, especially before sunrise.
Behind the rain, colder air arrives early next week. Monday night lows drop into the mid-30s, and temperatures continue trending downward toward New Year’s Week 2026. While a hard freeze is not expected immediately, the shift signals winter finally tightening its grip.
Drivers should slow down in fog, use low-beam headlights, and increase following distance. Plan extra time if traveling during fog-prone hours.
