Lake Charles, La. – Heavy rain and thunderstorms are set to drench much of Louisiana through the Labor Day weekend, bringing a risk of flash flooding and travel disruptions. Widespread showers developed early Saturday and are expected to redevelop throughout the day, with the highest concentration west of Interstate 49.
According to the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, tropical moisture paired with a slow-moving boundary will keep the atmosphere primed for repeated rounds of storms. Some areas may see several inches of rainfall in a short period, leading to localized flooding of roads, neighborhoods, and low-lying areas.
Communities from Alexandria south to Lafayette and Lake Charles face the greatest flooding potential, especially during the afternoon and evening hours when storms are most active. The NWS warns drivers not to attempt travel across water-covered roads, as even shallow flooding can quickly turn dangerous.
Residents are urged to monitor local updates, keep phones charged, and have alternate routes planned in case road closures develop. The unsettled pattern is likely to persist into Monday, meaning outdoor holiday plans may be impacted across much of the state.
