Louisiana – Wind rattles street signs and pushes across marshland this morning as dry air sweeps into southwest Louisiana. In Lake Charles, the breeze already feels stronger than a typical spring morning, and conditions are setting up for a risky combination of wind and fire danger.
According to the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. across southwest Louisiana and nearby southeast Texas. North winds between 15 and 25 mph with gusts approaching 40 mph could blow around unsecured objects and make travel difficult for high-profile vehicles.
Drivers along Interstate 10, Highway 171, and the I-210 loop should expect crosswinds, especially on bridges and elevated roadways near the Calcasieu River. Use extra caution if towing trailers or driving box trucks.
At the same time, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. through 7 p.m. as extremely dry air moves into the region. Relative humidity could fall to around 19 percent, creating conditions where any spark may spread quickly.
Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged today. Even small fires could grow rapidly in grassy areas around Lake Charles, Sulphur, and Westlake.
Current temperatures near 50°F at Lake Charles Regional Airport will climb into the mid-50s this afternoon with mostly sunny skies. Winds gradually weaken tonight as temperatures fall to the mid-30s, bringing a crisp but calmer evening.
The pattern shifts quickly afterward. Sunshine returns Tuesday with lighter winds, and temperatures begin climbing steadily through midweek.
By Wednesday afternoon, Lake Charles could see highs near 71°F, signaling the return of warmer spring weather across southwest Louisiana.
